There are distinct differences between an MPV and a small van. A van typically features a "one-box" design, meaning the passenger compartment and the engine share the same structural frame, with the engine positioned beneath and behind the driver's seat. While this layout simplifies the vehicle's structure, it results in a taller body and increased interior space, though it also leads to higher levels of engine noise. Furthermore, because the front seats are located at the very front of the vehicle, there is minimal crumple zone to protect the driver and front-seat passenger in the event of a head-on collision, resulting in a lower safety rating.
In contrast, a modern MPV typically features a "two-box" design based on a passenger car architecture; it often utilizes the same chassis and engine as a sedan, thereby offering a similar profile, driving experience, and level of passenger comfort. With the engine compartment located at the very front of the vehicle, the design effectively absorbs the impact of frontal collisions, thereby enhancing the safety of front-seat occupants.
MPVs boast a spacious passenger cabin that offers great flexibility in interior layout-arguably their most attractive feature. The cabin can accommodate seven to eight passengers while still leaving room for luggage; seating arrangements are highly adaptable, with seats that can be folded down, slid forward or backward, shifted laterally, or even rotated. Folding down the third-row seats transforms the vehicle into a passenger car with cavernous cargo space; folding down the three seats on the right creates an exceptionally long cargo area; and rotating the second-row seats 180 degrees allows for face-to-face interaction with third-row passengers. Alternatively, folding the seatbacks forward turns them into tabletops suitable for work or entertainment-the possibilities are endless. A standout example in this regard is the Foton MP-X, which offers 1.3 cubic meters more interior space than comparable models.
